Just another day in the Wood household…burning off energy at the park, William being fearless and Miguel figuring out that sticks can be used for weapons.

I took the boys to the Dallas Zoo this week, and, of course, I picked the one day that the weather was 91 degrees outside. We got there just after opening time, and made our way towards the elephant fountain. William was impressed there were coins in the fountain. The boys were excited to find a duck in the stream near the fountain.

After the duck excitement, we went to the Wilds of Africa to see the elephants, giraffes, and lions oh my! They weren’t too interested in the animals, but the Land Rover they could “drive” was the. best. thing. ever.

Next up was the monorail and lunch.

We visited the children’s area for a little while, but it was pretty busy with school field trips. They played on the playground and visited the large coy tank. After a spin on the carousel that Miguel loved while William, the dare devil himself, refused to sit on an animal and clung to me for life we called it a day and headed home.

Miguel celebrated his birthday last week and I made one of his favorite cakes. It is called Beach Cake and honestly, I really don’t know why. It is sinfully easy to make, is delicious, and best made a day ahead. Sorry for the cruddy photo.

Ingredients:

1 German Chocolate cake mix

1 can of Condensed milk (I use fat free)

1 jar of Caramel ice cream topping

1-2 bags of Heath bar candy chips

1 container of Cool Whip

Directions:

Make cake in 9x13 baking dish. While still hot, poke holes and pour condensed milk over top then caramel topping. Sprinkle with Heath bar candy chips. Cool and top with Cool Whip. Keep refrigerated.

There is this wise lady that I know, and she is a published authority on the trials, tribulations, and wonderfulness of motherhood. We chatted today, and after she validated my feelings of guilt and all that goes along with it she smirked and said, “My dear it is not selfishness, it is self-preservation.” So there you have it. Self-preservation, it’s my new mantra.

I’m going to interrupt the usual blog post full of photos of Miguel and William to take a minute to clear my brain. Most days I feel as if I am pulled in a million directions and constantly besieged with questions (why is that sign there? where is the taxi going? can I do this or that?), ongoing negotiations with the boys (why can’t they just do something the first time I ask?), and someone always needing something (William’s favorite line is I can’t do it) that I don’t often take time for myself. I don’t eat well, forget to take my vitamins, rarely fit in a workout or a pedicure or lunch with my girlfriends all because I feel this guilt. Mommy guilt. Wife guilt. Whatever kind of guilt you want to call it. GUILT.

Here’s the thing, I’m sitting here blogging when I should be cleaning up the house and I feel guilty. The boys are in bed, Miguel is out with clients, and Sweetie is arriving tomorrow at lunchtime and I have a busy morning of errands. There is a bag of crushed up veggie straws on the living room floor, the garbage disposal did something wonky so my kitchen counter is covered in all the stuff that was under the sink, trains and train tracks are covering the rug in the living room, the half bath smells like little boy pee pee because someone isn’t the best at aiming, and, well, you get the idea.

But, why I do I feel such guilt at taking thirty minutes for myself to blog instead of cleaning? Why do I feel guilty that I’m going to get a pedicure tomorrow morning instead of running all my errands? Why do I feel guilty that I’m contemplating hiring a babysitter for one evening a week so I can start a beginner’s yoga class? Why do I feel guilty all the damn time?

I think it all boils down to somehow along the way an idea that mothers are supposed to be self-less and constantly giving of themselves was instilled in me, and anything other than that meant you weren’t doing right by your children. Don’t get me wrong I love my husband and my children, but I know it is time I started taking a few moments a day for myself so that I will love myself as much as I love them. So, there you have it. My little secret. It’s time to start loving me right after I clean the house tonight.

And, as a reward, of making it through that whining all about me blog post…here’s the boys waiting for the DART train this weekend.

Miguel and William are really enjoying riding their bikes this year. They are both very fast and often I am seen running behind them or screaming “freeze!” Miguel calls his bike his “BMW convertible bike” while William has lovingly named his bike “blue bike.”

Every year, the boys have their photos taken in a field of bluebonnets and this year was no exception. These are a few snapshots I took of them right before our bluebonnet session with Heather at Fujitsu field.

Last weekend was the Spring Carnival and Silent Auction at Miguel’s preschool. I was involved with the auction so there aren’t too many photos, but let me assure you a great time was had by all. Miguel and William loved the bounce house, and Miguel was very proud to show off the paintings he and his class completed for the auction.
